I Love My
New Toy! is a wonderful book about emotions and friendship. Piggie gets a
new toy, and Elephant wants to play with it. When Elephant throws it into the
air, it crashes to the ground and breaks! Piggie gets very mad and very sad at
Elephant. Elephant is very sorry, but Piggie does not accept his apology until
Squirrel comes along and makes a new toy out of the broken one. Elephant decides
that he would rather play with Piggie than a toy because friends are better
than toys!
Willems appears
to use pencil for his illustrations. The illustrations are very simple and look
like they are drawn on plain white paper. The words on the pages are in
conversation bubbles. The facial expressions of Piggie and Elephant are very
humorous and would greatly appeal to children.
I Love My New Toy! would
make a great character education lesson for younger elementary students to
teach about emotions, friendship, forgiveness and sharing. Even though Elephant
breaks Piggie’s new toy, he forgives Elephant and asks if he wants to play with
his second new toy. Elephant would rather play with Piggie because friends are
better than toys. Language Arts could be incorporated by letting students write
about when they have been happy, sad or mad, forgave a friend or shared and why
that is important. Art could be
incorporated by having the students draw with pencil on white paper the facial
expressions of happy, sad, and mad to go along with Piggie’s emotions in I
Love My New Toy! This book did not receive any awards.
