Hello! Jambo! Ni hao!

Say Hello!
Written and Illustrated by Rachel Isadora
Scholastic Inc., 2010
26 Pages
Multicultural (Various)

This book teaches children to say hello in many languages! Carmelita is on her way to Abuela’s and greets many people along the way by saying, “Buenos dias,” “Shalom,” “Konichiwa,” “Jambo,” “Bonjour,” “Al Salaam,” “Ni hao,” and “Hola!” This book teaches children how to greet people from all over the world. It also teaches students to accept children who are look and speak differently than they do. In our ever changing culture, this is a great book to let students read!  I would recommend this book for students in preschool to second grade.

Isadora creates her illustrations using oil paints, printed paper and palette paper. I love the way the illustrations look; she mixes the paper in with the paint to create perfectly blended and unique illustrations. Each illustration is double page and features informal as well as very informal text placement. The cover is in wrap around format and shows Carmelita on her street with her dog with all of the many words for hello surrounding her.

This book would be a great book to teach students how to greet someone in a different language. This book could be used to teach a character education lesson on accepting people who are different than us. Each child in the book looked and spoke differently, but Carmelita greeted and was friends with each one! This book could also be used as an example of a book that uses collage as its medium. Students could write a story and illustrate it using collage. This book has not received any awards.
